Preparing Your HVAC System for Summer

As spring turns into a humid mid-Atlantic summer, your air conditioner becomes the most important comfort system in your home. Waiting for the first 95°F day in Washington, DC or Maryland to switch it on is a recipe for disaster. Preparing in advance reduces electric bills by up to 25% and wards off sudden compressor breakdowns.
5-Point Preparation Checklist
- Swap out your air filters. A clogged filter limits return airflow and overloads the blower. Overloaded coils cannot shed moisture and can freeze into a block of ice. Replace filters every 1 to 2 months.
- Trim back growth around the outdoor condenser. The outdoor unit dissipates all the heat pulled from your home. Clear shrubs, weeds, and branches at least 2 feet around the aluminum fins.
- Listen on startup. Run the cooling for 10 minutes. Heavy vibration, rhythmic clicking, or grinding fan noises warn that capacitors are weakening or motor bearings are seizing.
- Inspect the condensate drain line. The thin PVC pipe should drip freely while the system runs. A clogged pipe backs up, trips safety float switches, and shuts down your air handler.
- Book a professional tune-up. A preventative visit verifies refrigerant charge, relay health, and coil cleanliness. If your unit is near end of life, we install Energy Star replacements that save hundreds annually.
